Re: Stewardship Ontario-Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste program (MHSW)
As most of you are aware, the captioned program has been approved and will be instituted July 1, 2008. The program provides funding for the transportation and processing of MHSW materials and the funding for the program is generated through Steward fees charged on the sale of new MHSW products.
The fees generated by the program will be paid by Stewardship Ontario to any MHSW “Transporter” who collects these materials from any Generator, and takes them to any approved “Processor” for recycling. It is anticipated that GFL Liquid Waste Division Environmental Services will be approved as both a “Transporter” and a “Processor”.
At the outset, the program will only provide funding for transport of used oil filters and oil/ glycol plastic bottles (under 30L). As you know, GFL Liquid Waste Division has been providing these services for many years and we currently levy a modest charge. Effective July 1, 2008 any fee currently being paid by existing commercial customers for the pick-up and disposal of used oil filters and oil/glycol plastic bottles (under 30L) will be reduced to NO CHARGE. Services for the other products listed in the MHSW program will continue to be provided at the standard rates currently in effect.
We are pleased with the development of this new program and we hope all of our customers will take advantage of the opportunity to ensure the proper handling of all waste generated at their locations.
If you have any question or need clarification with respect to any aspect of this new program, we invite you to contact Tracy Crowell at 1-800-541-2527 ext 288 or by email to tcrowell@gflenv.com or you can check out the MHSW website at www.stewardshipontario.ca.
